This story is set in the early 1900s and takes an intentionally outdated view of trans and queer identities. In modern terms, our protagonist is best described as a butch lesbian living in disguise as a man. Her gender(s) being variously coerced, questioned, affirmed and denied by herself and others is frequent and plot-central. Proceed with curiosity and care.
